CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Middle Township High School’s Mock Trial Team was named the champion for Cape May County for the third year in a row.

On Tuesday, the team lost in the Southern Regional competition in New Brunswick.

The team defeated Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Sciences of Ocean County in the first round but lost in the second to Mainland Regional High School of Atlantic County.

“They had another tremendous year. The kids worked so hard,” said Middle Township High School Principal Rich Falletta.

Middle was named the winner of the county competition after winning five of six mock trial competitions. The mock trial contests took place over three weeks, and the Middle started preparing in September.

In an earlier interview, team coach Martina Trapani said having seven newcomers on Middle’s team heading to the regional competition is “a little scary.”

There are three seniors on the team.

“So they’re the backbone of the team and they’re propelling everyone else,” Trapani said.

The Middle Township Mock Trial Team won the county competition the last three years and went to the regional competition in 2012. The year before, the team won states and took part in the national competition.

The Middle Township Mock Trial Team includes Alex Casper, Ashley Smutnik, Victoria Shappell, Gabby Guiliano, Lauren Anderson, Ryan Hildebrandt, Dylan Rhile, Morgon Goranson, Alex Casper and Dominique McNeil. Understudies are Casey Salvadore, Brandon Brady and Jack Wade.

Martina Trapani and Joseph Towns are the teacher coaches and Fred Mick is the team’s attorney coach.

The Cape May County High School Mock Trial Program is sponsored by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation in cooperation with the Cape May.
