Man wounded in attack with box cutter

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP – A Cape May Court House man allegedly attacked another man with a box cutter several times during an argument March 9, according to police.

Police say Leo Collins, 51, allegedly cut Duane Mathis, 50, on his back, leg, and hand after an argument and fight.

Middle Township Police were called to the area of Route 9 and Shell Bay Avenue in Mayville for a report of a stabbing at 12:30 a.m. March 9.

Police say they found Mathis bleeding from several wounds on his body. Collins fled the scene and was found nearby, according to police.

Mathis of Cape May Court House identified the attacker as Leo Collins, according to police. The box cutter was recovered from the scene. 

Collins was arrested about an hour later, a short distance away from the incident. 

Matthis and Collins are friends and were walking home, police say.

Mathis was taken to Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May Court House for treatment. 

Collins has been charged with aggravated assault, a second-degree crime; possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, a third-degree crime; unlawful possession of a weapon, a fourth-degree crime; and certain person not to possess a weapon, a fourth-degree crime.

Collins was placed in Cape May County jail in default of $100,000 bail.

This case is being investigated by The Middle Township Police Major Crime Unit and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the case.
