RIO GRANDE -- A 55-year-old Rio Grande man allegedly tried to steal a wheelchair and other items Thursday, March 21, after beating up a Cape May man who is a double amputee, according to police.

Middle Township Police were called at 12:30 a.m. for a disturbance report and found Joseph Devine taking the 57-year-old victim’s wheelchair. Devine had other items as well, such as the man’s cell phone and checkbook.

Devine beat the other man, police said.

Middle Township Police Capt. John Edwards said the two men had argued. The victim was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. Edwards reports the man is OK.

Devine was intoxicated when he was arrested, Edwards said.

Devine has been charged with aggravated assault and theft. He is in the Cape May County Jail on $50,000 bail.
