CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE - The verdict is in. The Middle Township High School Mock Trial Team is going to state.

This year's match-up will make history for the competition, as two former state champions go head to head for the first-ever three-peat.

Middle Township will take on rivals from the West Morris Mendham High in Morris County in the New Jersey State Bar Foundation's Vincent J. Apruzzese High School Mock Trial Competition.

Both schools have won the state title twice. Middle Township went to the national competition in 2007 and again in 2011, said Martina Trapani, one of the team's coaches and a teacher at the high school.

The winner of the 2014 state title in the prestigious annual competition rests on the outcome of the final contest on Monday, March 24, 9 a.m., at the New Jersey Law Center off Ryders Lane in New Brunswick. The winner will represent New Jersey in the national competition, May 8-10, in Madison, Wis.

This week, three county winners - one each from high schools in the southern, central and northern regions of the state - competed in the state semi-finals for the chance to go to the state competition.

Middle Township and West Morris Mendham emerged as finalists in the March 19 semifinal contest. Members of Middlesex County's Noor Ul-Iman School, which came in third for the second year in a row, will serve as jurors at the final competition. A field of 234 schools registered at the beginning of the season. In all, more than 3,000 students participated in this year's competition.

Presiding over the championship round will be New Jersey Supreme Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner and Judge Marilyn Clark, Superior Court, Passaic County.

In the fictitious criminal case, a car carrying siblings Cathy and Sid Sawyer crashes into a tree, resulting in the former's death. But who was at the wheel? Vehicular homicide and related charges are the substance of the State v. Sid Sawyer.

The 32nd annual Vincent J. Apruzzese High School Mock Trial Competition is sponsored by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation in cooperation with New Jersey's county bar associations and the New Jersey State Bar Association.
