MIDDLE TOWNSHIP - Two people were killed, and two injured in a high speed collision Thursday night on Route 47, south of the Wildwood Water Works bend, according to the Middle Township Police Department.

Millville resident Stephen Carsten, 29, and Del Haven resident Jeffrey Natale, 19, were killed on impact when Carsten's Chevy Malibu struck Natale's Infiniti head on, police said in a statement. Witnesses told police that Carsten was speeding.

An unnamed 17-year-old was a passenger in Natale's car.

Prior to the head-on collision, Carsten - who police say was passing on a curve against a double yellow line - sideswiped North Cape May resident James McDonnell, 66, who was driving a Ford Taurus.

McDonnell and the 17-year-old were airlifted to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center City Division.

Green Creek Fire Company with the assistance of Rio Grande Fire Company responded to the scene, along with medics from AtlantiCare, Rio Grande Rescue, and Middle Township Rescue.

The crash is still under investigation by the Middle Township Fatal Crash team, Major Crime Unit, and the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office.

Police spokesman Capt. John Edwards confirmed that Carsten  is an employee at Bayside State Prison. He said McDonnell also works for the Department of Corrections.
