CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — A Middle Township High School staff member has been suspended with pay, a school official said, Thursday, May 8.

The suspension comes after rumors surfaced of an investigation of an improper relationship between the staff member and a student.

“I can’t address those rumors, or whether any investigation is occurring,” said Superintendent Michael Kopakowski.

“But we take any allegation of improper behavior very seriously,” he said.

Kopakowski confirmed that a staff member has been suspended, but could not comment as to when the suspension took effect, nor elaborate on the position the staff member holds at the school

“Our number one priority is the health and safety of our children,” Kopakowski said.

“And I think it's important to remember that all persons are innocent until proven guilty.”

On Wednesday, May 7, the school district sent a Global Connect phone message to the parents of children in the Middle Township High School. A transcript of that message follows:

Good afternoon.

This is Michael Kopakowski, Superintendent of Middle Township Public Schools.

The purpose of this call is to provide clarification surrounding rumors you and your children may have heard regarding a possible investigation of one of our high school staff members for alleged improper behavior with a student.

I cannot address those rumors or whether any investigation is occurring, except to say that we take any allegation of improper behavior very seriously.

We do not condone any type of improper behavior from our staff members towards our children, as we consider the health and safety of our children our number one concern.

In discharging our responsibilities we immediately remove any staff member alleged to have acted improperly from interacting with students.

However, it is important to remember that all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty.

I really can’t share more than that, except that we will work with all appropriate state agencies, and if appropriate, we will conduct our own investigation which maintains privacy and confidentiality.

We have a great staff and believe these types of allegations are very rare.

However, if you or your children see or hear something believed to be inappropriate, I urge you to bring it to us.

The staff and administration are here for support and to help you, your children are our number one priority.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you.
