Two charged with armed robbery in Middle Township

Two people are in custody, including a Rio Grande woman, after an armed robbery at a motel, police announced Monday.

On June 12, at 9 p.m. the Middle Township Police Department responded to the Whispering Woods Motel for a report of an armed robbery. Upon the arrival of patrol officers it was determined that a man entered a motel room brandishing a silver handgun, and demanded money.

He fled the scene in the passenger seat of a blue Chrysler 300, with a female driver. 

At 2:30 a.m. the vehicle was spotted at the Rio Grande Wawa by Patrolman Martin Lindholm. Thorn Smith, 24, of Roselle, and a Chanice Matthews, 22, of Rio Grande, were arrested without incident, according to police. The pair were both charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery in the first degree, and unlawful possession of a weapon, according to a statement from Middle Township Police. Smith and Matthews were held at Cape May County Correctional Center on $150,000 bail.

This case is being investigated by the Middle Township Major Crime Unit, with the assistance of the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.
