RIO GRANDE – A Rio Grande man is in jail after his demands for a cigarette were rebuffed, and he attempted to assault a local resident Saturday July 5, police said.

John Armstrong, 45, was charged with burglary, aggravated assault and making terroristic threats after he attempted to punch a person who turned down his request for a cigarette, police said.

When the victim tried to get away from Armstrong by entering Momiji Japanese Restaurant, Armstrong followed the victim and tried to get a knife from the kitchen, police said.

The kitchen staff subdued Armstrong before he got the knife, until patrol units arrived on scene, according to police.

Police said Armstrong was taken into custody without incident, and the victim was unharmed.

Armstrong was taken to county jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
