CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – County residents and visitors from all over streamed through the Cape May County Park and Zoo, Saturday, Aug. 9, and many of them were there to raise their voices in songs of praise at the sixth annual “Praise in the Park.”

Joshua Fox, youth minister at First United Methodist Church in Cape May Court House and organizer of the event, said he couldn’t estimate how many people attended, but that the event has grown each year since 2009.

“This is a good way to reach out to both the community and the tourists,” he said.

This year, seven groups played throughout the day near the park’s entrance, as hundreds of people made their way into the park. Many stopped to listen and raise their hands in worship, as the groups played a mixture of traditional and contemporary Christian music.

“We try to get sponsors each year to make everything free to the public,” Fox said. “This year, we had sno-cones, bounce houses, face painting and popcorn.”

And music, he said. Lots of music.

“We partner with other churches, and they bring their bands to the park,” he said. “This year, we had at least five other churches participate.”

Fox said he hopes to continue growing Praise in the Park, and he’s already thinking about next year’s event.

“We want to bring in a bigger name band next year, to draw more people with a headliner band,” Fox said. “We want to get more organizations involved.”

Praise in the Park is about community, Fox said.

“It’s a way to let people know the good news that God loves them, and that he sent Jesus, his son, to die on the cross for them,” he said.
