Vehicle crashes into Wildwood pumping station Vehicle crashes into Wildwood pumping station RIO GRANDE - A vehicle crashed into the Wildwood pumping station Saturday, Aug. 23 at 6 a.m., Middle Township police said Sunday.

Stanley Lovett, 25, Bridgeton, lost control of his 2010 red Mercury Milan while coming out of the  bend near the pumping station traveling south on Route 47, said Capt. John Edwards.

Township police responding to 911 calls about the crash said that Lovett struck the guardrail on the north side of the road, then traveled back across the north and south bound lanes, before he crashed into the Wildwood pumping station.

According to a Wildwood press release, the 104-year-old building is the sole pumping station for the utility, and serves customers in Middle and Lower Townships as well as Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, West Wildwood and North Wildwood.

“The station remains open and is doing its job,” said water utility General Manager Ron Grookett.

According to Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano, water utility workers responded to the scene and secured the building.

Grookett said both the car’s driver, as well as the building itself, were “very lucky.” “If the car would have struck two or three inches on either side of where it did hit, it would have caused far greater damage to the pumping station and the car.”

“The curve on Route 47 near the pumping station is a very dangerous one,” noted Troiano. “People should take care and heed in this area. It doesn’t take much to get in trouble on this stretch of the road.”

“The state of New Jersey should evaluate this portion of Route 47,” said Grookett. “Numerous accidents have occurred here, some resulting in death.”

Edwards said that Lovett told police that he fell asleep at the wheel.

Lovett was not injured in the crash, and police said he was issued a careless driving summons.
