There is a report of a fuel spill and an injury. According to the Middle Township Police, the pilot was not injured, but a passenger had what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.

Both work for the county department.

Dan Konecny was flying the helicopter, said Peter Bosak, superintendant of the county Department of Mosquito Control.

"It was a typical Monday morning survelliance flight," Bosak said. "They were on the bay shore and flying in toward the home base, and that's when they experienced some difficulty."

Bosak said that he has spoken with the pilot. "He was in shock," Bosak said. "He didn't have much to say."

Bosak did not identify the passenger, but said that he was an inspector, and had suffered a "bump on the head."

The Cape May County Sheriff’s Department and officials with the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office were on scene, assisting Middle Township Police. Firefighters and other emergency crews were also on scene.

No one was hurt on the ground, and the pilot managed to bring the chopper down in a recreation field without damaging any houses.

"I have to think they started going down and probably maneuvered into the field," said Middle Township Committeeman Dan Lockwood, who was at the scene this morning.

Police have blocked off the area around the crash site. Police say Sites Avenue, Boyd Street and School House Lane are closed to traffic.

The helicopter is registered as a four-seat, single engine Hiller UH-12E from 1982.

The mosquito department uses the helicopter to reach remote areas on the marshes of Cape May County, and has volunteered its use during emergencies and missing person searches.

According to a statement from the Middle Township Police Department, the helicopter crashed on the Boyd Street Field.

Both the pilot and the passenger were taken to Cape Regional Medical Center.
