MIDDLE TOWNSHIP – The annual best-tasting beach plum contest runs through Sept. 15.

People should pluck a half cup of beach plums and take them to the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Office, care of Jenny Carleo, agricultural agent, 355 Court House-South Dennis Road in Cape May Court House.

Beach plums will be judged for sweetness and size. There is no limit to the number of times a person may enter.

Beach plums are sometimes used as decorative plants. They grow wild in the county, often in the dunes, and are sought to make delicious, jams, juices and preserves, and they are the official fruit of Cape May County.

The prize is $100 and a trophy awarded at the Cape May County Board of Agriculture’s annual dinner.

The Cape May County Board of Agriculture and Beach Plum Association of Cape May County are hosting the contest.
