More 20 volunteers from Middle Township High School and Friends of Cape May National Wildlife Refuge cleaned up the Two Mile Beach Unit that suffered damage from Hurricane Sandy Saturday, Nov. 10.

The unit is south of Wildwood Crest.

Storm surge and high waves on the ocean side broke through the dunes in several spots, washing several inches of sand onto the entire boardwalk trail and observation platform near the beach.

On the bay side, wind and high tides washed debris onto the newly-opened Marsh Trail boardwalk near the tidal ponds on Ocean Drive.  The tidal action also lifted the entire boardwalk off its moorings in spots.

Volunteers, including the high school’s National Honor Society, spent the morning with rakes, wheelbarrows, shovels and brooms cleaning off the trails.
