The Community Christian Library hosted a volunteer appreciation luncheon on Aug. 23 to honor all of its volunteers during its eighth “Tutoring Tuesday” summer sessions that ran from July 5 until Aug. 23. Deb Devitt, who volunteered as both the program originator and coordinator, welcomed and thanked the volunteers. Tom Devitt gave the invocation, which included giving thanks for “this very happy celebration.”

The volunteer tutoring teachers honored at this luncheon were Bette Evans, Caroline Jones, Sandy Kurtz, Maryanne Langley, Pam Shute, Jackie Stites, Gail Wood, Joan Blount, Joan McLaughlin, Diane Casciano, Janet Frikert, Mary Beth James, Linda Kelley, Naomi Jane Lonergan, Marge Morano, Vicki Peterson, Lisa Ludman, Linda Stiteler, Sally Jane Payson, Leanne Barkley and Debbie Chapman. Betty Irmler, Audrey Countiss, Janet Sikora, Deb Yoast and Pat Dougherty were also honored for volunteering in hospitality. Elena Garrison and Alice Lord were honored for volunteering in the library.

“Son Surf Beach Bash” was the theme of the 2011 evening Vacation Bible School at First United Methodist Church in Cape May Court House during the week of Aug. 8 to 12, with Dawn Robbins serving as volunteer director. There were eight children’s groups with one for each grade level from pre-kindergarten to grade six.

The teaching themes of included “Meet up with Jesus,” “Look up to Jesus,” “Join up with Jesus,” “Open up to Jesus,” and “Fire up to Jesus.”

Themed crafts were done and there were outdoor games each evening. Bible stories were told to go along with each evening’s theme. Songs were sung and Bible verses memorized and recited each evening along with themed snacks being served. For the closing program on Aug. 12, all the children performed in a closing program on stage before family members.

More than 300 attended the 12th annual Peach Festival in St. Gabriel’s Hall of Our Lady of the Angels Church on Aug. 13 and 14.

The festival, along with the solicitation of the over 75 donated prizes on the raffle tables, was once again coordinated by Mary M. Durkin. Also, among the items raffled off separately at a special table were a large hand crocheted tablecloth made and donated by Carol Juliana, green fees for two/gold cart included gift certificate donated by the Avalon Country Club, twosome/golf cart and green fees gift certificate donated by the Wildwood Country Club, and a 2012 complimentary associate membership donated by the Sand Barrens Country Club.

All proceeds will go to the Educational Ministry Fund at Our Lady of the Angels Church.

The late Irene Cohen, a longtime kindergarten teacher at Elementary No. 1 who died on Jan. 23, 2004, founded the festival in 2000 and coordinated it during its first four years.

Summer is Bible time at these programs

“Hometown Nazareth Where Jesus Was A Kid” was the theme of the weeklong Bible Fellowship Church Vacation Bible School that was held in the church sanctuary along with its family center (social hall) between 9:15 a.m. and noon from July 18 to 22. Various themed craft/recreational/Bible study activities along with a refreshment break centered around a daily Bible point were offered in six 20 minute rotating intervals among groups in the family center with an opening and closing celebration time conducted inside the sanctuary located at 1159 Route 9 South, Cape May Court House.

The five Bible points of study were “Jesus had a family…we do too,” “Jesus had a name…we do too,” “Jesus had a home…we do too,” “Jesus went to church…we do too,” and “Jesus served others…we do too.” Volunteers who reside locally along with others from Bible Fellowship Church in Ephrata, Pa. and Grace Bible Fellowship Church in Harrisburg, Pa. conducted the various activities throughout the week for the 60 children enrolled in the program.

The Middle Township Senior Citizen Center, located at 23 Romney Place in Cape May Court House, hosted its annual summer luncheon and talent show on July 21. Mayor Susan DeLanzo welcomed and spoke before the more than 70 seniors in attendance following the serving of the complimentary lunch.

Lauri Flemming then officiated over the talent portion of the program. The talent show included seniors Maryetta Dorricott and Peg Gillies who tap danced along with performing dance and song numbers to various medleys. Hannah Rose Zoltowski, age 11, Natalya Zoltowski, age 8, and Vanessa Flemming, age 11, also danced and sang in addition to Lauri Flemming performing.

Pam Witkowsky, affectionately known as “Auntie Pam,” was the volunteer director of the First Baptist Church in Cape May Court House “The Big Apple Adventure, Where Faith and Life Connect” summer Vacation Bible School at the church during the week of July 18 to 22. This is her 11th year directing this program. Everyone involved with this program volunteered their time

During each of the two-hour-and-45-minute Bible study sessions from 6 to 8:45 p.m., the various groups enjoyed craft activities which included making mustard seed necklaces, love notes for Jesus, Bible bookmarks, spread the news photo frames, and a live for Jesus bottle. Bible stories and verses, music, movie time, and recreational activities were also included in each session.

Basketball campers show off their skills

The 16th annual Shore Shot All Star Basketball Camp completed its second summer session in the Cape May Technical High School gymnasium under the direction of Cape May Tech Varsity Boys Coach Bob Ridgway. Ridgway has been head coach at Cape May Technical High School for 13 years and a teacher at the Special Services District for 26 years. Ridgway started the All Star Basketball Camp program and has been its coach each year since its inception.

Demonstrating their skills, each of the Bob Cats, Bucks, 76ers, Celtics, Kings and Sun teams performed separately for several minutes during the awards ceremony on July 22. This culminated the five-day program for the 60 girls and boys ranging in ages from 6 to 15, and divided into age groups by team. Ridgway was MC for the event, with the campers’ parents and other family members seated in the bleachers.

Each Shore Shot All Star Camper received a Shore Shot Basketball, All Star Photo, NBA Boston Celtic Rajon Rondo and Indiana Fever Katie Douglass Certificates of Achievement and college memorabilia.

“Pandamania, God Is Wild About Us” was the theme of the seventh annual Vacation Bible School at Our Lady of the Angels Church in Cape May Court House during the week of June 20 to 24. Mary Joan Piechocki was the coordinator of this morning program with each session beginning at 9 a.m. and lasting until noon. Piechocki also coordinated the bible lessons.

Volunteer coordinators were Betsy Filippo in songs; Louise Sugar in food; and Eileen Moffett, Tracy Fesler and Anna Allen in crafts. The teen volunteers included Kelly Geary, Katie Sugar, Gia Hanna, Kayla Hanna, Brendyn Anaya, David Sugar, Brandon Haring and Alyssa Sullivan.

The daily focal points included “God made us” (Creation), “God listens to us” (Elijah), “God watches over us” (Jonah), “God loves us no matter what” (Jesus), and God give us great gifts (Nativity). Each was explained using themed based bible stories, verses, songs, craft activities, games and snacks. Each morning session opened with the children saying a prayer.

Berniece Bright, who was honored as an Elementary No. 1 Teacher of the Year for 2006-07, retired on June 17 after a distinguished 37-year teaching career in the Middle Township School District.

She taught first grade at the former Rio Grande Elementary School from September 1974 until June 1980 when the school closed. Then she transferred to Elementary No. 1, where she had attended school herself as a child beginning with kindergarten, to teach second grade in Sept. 1980 for the next 31 years.

Middle School presents Egyptian Night

Egyptian Night at the Middle Township Middle School was hosted by Sue Ryan’s sixth grade social studies students on the evening of June 6. A variety of Egyptian projects were on display with the students standing around their respective projects and answering questions of the attendees. In addition, students offered the attendees a tour of King Tut’s Tomb.

Elementary No. 1 honored its June “Super Citizens” during a special lunch period in the school cafeteria on June 16. Principal Catherine Kelly spoke with each of the honorees in addition to awarding them a letter, a certificate, and a Panther Paw pin during this event.
