CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE -- Bud Scull and wife Bobette hosted a 60th Middle Township High School (MTHS) “Class of 1946” reunion at their home in Cape May Court House on the afternoon of May 21, 2006 that I had the pleasure of photographing and covering for the June 1, 2006 “Socially Strolling” column. One third of the class, 13 members of the 39 graduates, attended this event. Those who were able to attend from that class were host Sherman “Bud” Scull and wife Bobette; Frances (Camp) Hansen and husband Thomas of Pilesgrove; Alice (Fellenbaum) Hunder and husband Clair of Mt. Laurel; Nan (Akin) Alosi accompanied by Ruth McClure of Lewes, Del.; Harriet (High) Martin of Court House; Walter English and wife Joyce of Atco; William Salvesen accompanied by Jane Scobey of Avalon; Osman “Bud” Corson and wife Edith of South Seaville; Anna Belle (Huston) Revelle of  Northfield; Anne (Revelle) Carney of Northfield; Samuel Goodman and wife Joyce of Court House; Jean (Morris) Albrecht and husband Lewis of Seaville; and Mildred (Trout) Cox of Port Elizabeth. Unfortunately, Anna Belle (Huston) Revelle and William Salvesen, who both attended this reunion, have since passed away.
Scull has been the organizer of all five “MTHS Class of 1946” reunions held over the past six decades. The first was in 1950, at the former Machette’s Restaurant in Swainton.  Then reunions were held in 1954 and 1956 at the former Bala’s Inn in Somers Point.  Four decades were to pass before Scull organized the 50th Reunion in 1996 that was hosted by the Sculls in their home.
As freshmen in 1942, they recall being in three separate classrooms in the former MTHS building on South Main Street in Court House. Some spoke of their first jobs out of high school. Frances Camp Hansen recalled working as a bookkeeper for the former Marine National Bank and then joining the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Services). Annabelle Huston Revelle worked in the former Court House office of “The Cape May County Gazette” as a secretary. Nan Akin Alosi was a bookkeeper who worked in the former First National Bank of Stone Harbor.
For years, Jean (Morris) Albrecht and husband Lewis have moved entire home structures as well as restoring them. She is also an active charter member of the Historical Preservation Society of Upper Township. William Salvesen is a retired builder. Anne (Revelle) Carney operated a plumbing business for years with her husband William Carney in Northfield. Walter English retired as a research chemist for Campbell’s Soup after 36 years.
Alice Fellenbaum Hunder, who is a retired textile designer, recalls Bud Scull singing at the wedding of her and husband Clair on Oct. 14, 1950 at the Presbyterian Church on 9th Street in Avalon. Bud Corson retired as a civil engineer and surveyor while Sam Goodman retired as a sergeant from the New Jersey State Police after 28 years. Harriet (High) Martin was the County 4-H secretary for 28 years.
Sherman “Bud” Scull was the director of music at the First United Methodist Church in Cape May Court House for 30 years, from 1950 until 1980, and has been a church organist or choir director at other churches as well as at various activities for the past 26 years.
He also operated the family business, Scull’s Hardware on Mechanic Street, for the last 35 years of its existence. It was opened by his father in December 1937 and closed by Bud in December 1994 when he retired. Bud married Bobette (Peterson) a 1961 MTHS graduate in 1978. They have a daughter Kasey, who graduated MTHS in 1999, and is married to Jim Rich.
The Sculls’ buffet, as well as their home, was decorated in the themed orange and black MTHS colors with a MTHS Panther Flag hanging in their living room. The delicious salads and other homemade foods and desserts made by the Sculls were enjoyed by everyone along with the rekindling of friendships from yesteryear at this special reunion held four years ago.
Asked last week if they were planning to host a 65th anniversary reunion in 2011, the Sculls said they were undecided at this point.
