A large crowd gathered at the Ocean City Yacht Club on a warm sunny evening to enjoy the Ocean City surf team benefit.

I caught up with Jen Bowman running from her home a block away to the yacht club with a couple of boxes to finish setting up for the benefit she had been working on all afternoon.

Peggy Blizzard and her sister, Susan Biglin, greeted guests at the door. Susan’s son, Andrew, appeared as Sebastian in the Ocean City Intermediate School’s play, “The Little Mermaid.” I joked with Charlie Bowman, Mike Lukens and Tim Laverty, who were relaxing on the sofa in the lobby after setting up for the silent auction. Mike Lukens showed me the surfboard he made for the silent auction admitting this is his 16th long board.

Greg Sykora, leader of the band, SSP’s, had just finished setting up the stage with the sound systems and instruments and took a break to talk to me and gave me a list of the songs they would perform. Greg does the vocals while Paul Ringkamp is on lead guitar. Bob Koob and John Voht play drums. Tim Laverty plays rhythm guitar. Don Macinni plays flute, guitar and congos while Wayne Blizzard is on keyboard and Quas Gandolfo plays bass. Greg’s daughter, Josie, and her friend, Katie Esparza, came to dance the night away. Greg admitted the SSP’s only play six benefits a year as this is their hobby and they donate their services.

Christina Wilson got help from Katie Bowman and Sydney Rossiter selling raffle tickets. Avid surfer Bill Bowman really wanted to win the surfboard as he was filling his name in on lots of tickets. Dana DeAngelo has lived in Ocean City since 1980 after being a shoobie for many years. Dana’s 9-year-old son, Justin, attends the intermediate school. Matthew MacMichael is an avid surfer whose kids also love to surf. That leaves wife Johanna, who plans to take up surfing.

Donna and Bill Heap enjoyed biking the boardwalk with their children on this beautiful Saturday. Beth and Steve Dyjak are looking forward to taking their son, Ethan, on another trip to Disney World over spring break. When I admired Beth’s little beaded purse, she told me she got it from Helena Hamilton at her consignment shop.

Congrats and best wishes to Margaret Gallagher and Herb Godfrey, who got engaged March 1. Margaret’s going to be in a household full of six men: Herb, his two sons and her three sons. Caren and Brian Broadley are delighted that daughter Taylor, who will graduate from St. Joe’s in May, has landed a job with Tokyo Marine in Philadelphia.

Tom Aromando took a much needed break during the busy tax season to enjoy the benefit with wife Sandy.

Sara and Ray Clark spend lots of time in New York with daughters Faelyn, 5, and Lyla, 3, who have established a modeling career in print ads for Target and Ralph Lauren. Dana Kelly and Becky Jenkins hired Ocean City High School senior Natalie McKenna to take care of their four children while they attended the surf benefit.

Andrea Bowman recently started a new website business and she and husband Bill and their children are looking forward to the annual Bowman clan vacation surfing in Hatteras during spring break. Jim and JoAnn Waters didn’t have to worry about where to park at the yacht club as they just had to walk across the street from their house and they were there.

I told Jim I saw his double walking along the beach in Punta Cana in January. Jimmy and JoAnn enjoyed the benefit with their daughter, Jennifer, and son-in-law, Lt. Col. Tom Dahl, who has been in the US Air Force for 26 years and is stationed at the Hughes Technical Center at the present time. Jennifer is the owner of the Segway Tours in Somers Point. Denise and Gary Jessel had the opportunity to attend a Phillies spring training game in Clearwater, Fla. during a recent trip. Rody O’Rourke looked great in print party pants from Collette’s.

While Leigh and Jon Batastini enjoyed the benefit at the yacht club while their daughter, Emily, celebrated her 15th birthday upstairs with her girlfriends. I enjoyed catching up with Chris and Kim Weiland at the benefit and Kim donated his painting of the Eighth Street surf beach to the silent auction. Thanks to Steve Williams, who stepped up to take a picture with my camera. Steve graduated Ocean City High School in ’79 and is the owner of Williams Custom Building. Steve’s grandfather was the captain of the Ocean City Beach Patrol for many years. Carlo Calle wanted to know if I ever get to spend a night at home with my husband.

Scott Raab and this columnist joked about usually running into each other on West Avenue on our lunch breaks. Kim Styer attended Mr. OCHS with her daughter, Lee, and wanted to know if I enjoyed the competition. I passed Beverly and Frank McCall and Vonnie and Ed Price as I headed for the buffet where I caught up with Bettiann Kemenosh, Jackson Neall and Mark Raab checking out the buffet where Bill McGinnity and his crew were serving up Italian fare.

When I spotted Don Pileggi, Ken Cooper and Charlie Bowman sitting near the buffet, I joined them. Don started the Ocean City Surfing Association in 1960. Ken Cooper was delighted to hear Jim and I had taken my brother and sister-in-law, John and Fran Maberry from Maryland, to the community center, highlighted with a trip to the museum where Al Crescenzo gave us a personally guided tour Saturday afternoon.

I spotted Keith Hartzell, Becky Freidel and Scott Ping enjoying dinner on the other side of the room and went over to chat. Jen and Mike DeVlieger were two days early in their St. Patrick’s Day attire. When I caught up with Clay Rossiter relaxing on the sofa in the lobby with his daughter, Carley, he told me his wife, DJ, was in Vermont skiing with her girlfriends for the weekend.

Steve Beseris, intermediate school librarian and surf team coach, was on hand for the benefit. When I opened the door to get my coat from the closet near the front door, I was surprised to find Rody O’Rourke and Peaches Lukens engrossed in conversation as the closet was the only place it was somewhat quiet. Among the many guests enjoying the benefit were Kathy Taylor, Antwan McClellan, Tom Oves, Lisa and Michael Allegretto, Julie and Mike Dattilo and Jerry Palermo
