More than a century of wedding dresses at county museum

The Cape May County Museum is hosting an exhibit of wedding dresses through the end of September that feature a few things that are old, some new, a couple borrowed- and even one that’s blue.

“The Bride Wore White?” is an exhibit of 17 wedding dresses that were worn from 1873 to 2004. According to Pary Woehlcke, the museum director, many of the dresses were worn by Cape May County women and were chosen to represent styles worn over the last century.

“A year and a half ago, we had a fashion show of the clothing in the costume closet at the museum, and the very last article we featured were wedding dresses,” said Woehlcke, “It wasn’t until then I realized how many wedding dresses we had, so we wanted to have an exhibit.”

In the spirit of our fall bridal preview, the staff at The Current surveyed the newsroom, sales department and ad designers to find out their favorite wedding movies of all time. Many had several responses, but were bullied into choosing just one for the sake of the survey. Overwhelmingly, the “Father of the Bride” remake was a newsroom favorite, but there are a few others that received multiple votes. And the list is as follows: Add a comment

Many options for wedding transportation

Transportation is not the first thing most people think of when planning their wedding day, but as a small yet important part of one of the most momentous occasions in a person’s life, it certainly isn’t something that should be overlooked. There are many choices when it comes to finding a way to the ceremony or reception, said David Geiger, the co-owner of Atlantic Limousine in Atlantic City, and the key is picking the right one for the situation.

“I’ve been doing this for over 30 years, so I’ve learned a lot through the years,” Geiger said. Add a comment

There are few life events more motivating for weight loss than a wedding. Brides are the center of attention on the big day that is also memorialized by thousands of photographs. It’s no wonder that brides often look to change the way they look leading up to the wedding day.

By following the nutrition changes and a focused exercise regime suggested, local experts say brides can shape up even if they only have a few months.

Nutrition consultant Nancy Adler of Linwood said she frequently meets with brides who sometimes have waited until the last minute to shape up. She uses a few key tips to help them shed pounds and appear more sculpted as the bride gets ready to slip into that white gown: Add a comment

It isn’t easy holding out for the perfect dress

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – When my fiancé and I became engaged in January I hadn’t given much thought to a wedding dress. And when we set a date two years in the future, I figured I had time.

While it’s probably true that I do have plenty of time to find the perfect dress for me, I am having trouble pin-pointing in which direction to go.

It doesn’t help that at every turn I am inundated with new ideas and various persons’ perspectives on what they think I would want. It’s a confusing venture for someone who never really considered a wedding dress until the moment she became engaged. Add a comment

Getting married New Orleans style

alt Jeff Leber and Ashley Shackelford will be married in New Orleans in October.

My son, Jeff Leber, will be married in New Orleans in October.  His fiancée, Ashley Shackelford, and her family are from the New Orleans area.  They are both currently living in King of Prussia, Pa.

It will be a New Orleans style event with a second line accompanying them from the church to the wedding reception.  A second line is a tradition in brass band parades in New Orleans. The main line is the main section of the parade, or the members of the band with the parading permit; those who follow them to enjoy the music are called the second line. The second line's style of traditional dance, in which participants walk and sometimes twirl a parasol or handkerchief in the air, is called second lining. It has been called the quintessential New Orleans art form. Add a comment

A destination wedding close to home

Like every bride and groom, Heather and Jesse Conway of Egg Harbor Township want their wedding day to be memorable for them and for their guests.

When they first got engaged a little more than two years ago it was their dream to have a gorgeous destination wedding. They whittled their guest list to 58 people and the original plan was to head to Mexico’s Rivera Maya and invite close friends and family to make the trip with them.

“We thought everyone could relax and have a little getaway vacation in the sun and our wedding would be a part of their vacation,” Heather said. “It was going to be beautiful. Then reality set in. Add a comment
