St. Thomas Parish News: Holy day mass schedule Aug. 15

Written by Lynne Flanagan Friday, August 08, 2014 12:00 am

The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary falls on Friday, Aug. 15 and the holy day mass schedule will be in effect. On Thursday, Aug. 14 there will be a 6:30 p.m. mass in the church followed by a blessing of the sea. This ritual dates back to 1445 when the bishop of Cervia, Italy was on board a ship when a storm arose. The bishop threw his pastoral ring into the water and prayed to calm the sea. The raging storm stopped and a tradition of tossing a "ring" of flowers into the water was born. This beautiful mass and ceremony always draws a large crowd.

BrigStrong BrigStrong

The Superstorm Sandy information sharing sessions are moving to Wednesdays starting on Feb. 26. Many of us are still in the painfully slow process of recovering from the storm. It helps to share the information we learned along the way and at the same time get an update on the latest recovery programs.

The previous program was part of a grant that was headed up by New Jersey Hope and Healing. The new weekly program runs from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Brigantine Beach Community Center and consists of a Sandy update by a Brig Strong representative and then an information sharing session, where one can find useful suggestions for coping with and solving Sandy-related issues. The sessions are free and open to adults. Light refreshments are served. Come out and join your neighbors: “You don’t have to go it alone.”
