Halloween Harvest Festival this weekend offers fun for kids and adults

BRIGANTINE-The island will be host to ghosts, witches, zombies and other scary creatures as the city, Chamber of Commerce, Presbyterian Church and Elks stage Halloween events this weekend. 

On Friday, Oct. 24 there will be a free showing of the movie “Hotel Transylvania” 6 p.m. in Haneman Park, 15th Street South and Bayshore Avenue. 

A costume parade will start the festivities Saturday at 1:30 p.m. That will be followed by a block party 2-6 p.m. on 15th Street featuring rides and vendors.

The Atlantic County Library System is accepting nonperishable food items for the Community Food Bank of New Jersey - Southern Branch and local food pantries. Any unopened, unexpired nonperishable food is appreciated, but the most needed items include meals in a can, canned tuna, peanut butter, canned fruits, canned vegetables, canned soup, shelf-stable milk, and cereal.

Absecon Lighthouse haunted tours Oct. 25

Do you want to discover if Absecon Lighthouse is home to ghostly keepers that still watch over the shore in Atlantic City?  Did the Jersey Devil pay a visit in 1909? Visit the Absecon Lighthouse to hear the ghost stories that prompted a visit from SyFy's Ghost Hunters. The New Jersey Researchers of Paranormal Evidence will be on property to help visitors hunt for ghosts and play eerie recordings taken during a paranormal investigation.

The Brigantine Schools PTA will hold a bake sale 2-6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 at 15th Street South, after the annual Halloween parade. Homemade goodies such as cakes, cupcakes, pies, caramel apples and more will be available for purchase. Proceeds benefit the children of Brigantine schools.

For the first time since 1982, the Philadelphia Flyers full team will be making a stop in Atlantic City to hold an open practice for fans at noon Sunday, Nov. 9 at Boardwalk Hall. The Flyers open practice is sponsored by Tropicana Casino & Resort Atlantic City.

Admission is free, but a ticket is required. Information about obtaining free tickets will be available in the near future.

Brigantine Chamber sponsoring scarecrow contest as part of Halloween Harvest Weekend

BRIGANTINE – The Brigantine Chamber of Commerce will hold a Scarecrow Contest Saturday, Oct. 25 in front of City Hall as part of the city’s Halloween Harvest Festival Weekend.

Entry is free. Participants must preregister by filling out and entry form that can be found in local newspapers and either dropping the form off at the city manager’s office at City Hall or mailing it to the Brigantine Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 484, Brigantine, NJ 08203.

Saturday, Oct. 4 is the feast of St. Francis of Assisi and the annual blessing of animals is 10 a.m. in the church parking lot on Eighth St. Pets of all kinds, cats, dogs, fish, birds, reptiles and rodents (in cages please) are welcome, whether Catholic or not.

Trip to Brandywine River Museum

The Brigantine Cultural Arts Commission sponsors a bus trip to the Brandywine River Museum in historic Chadds Ford, Pa.  on Tuesday, Oct. 21.

A guided tour will escort visitors through the museum to view the works of N.C., Andrew and Jamie Wyeth. The cost is $40 per person and includes admission, transportation and tour. Lunch will be on your own. There is a restaurant on the premises. Call 609-266-3808 or 609-266-2545.
