From the desk of Councilman Ken Schaffer

Politics, both being an elected official and running for office, is more than a part-time commitment.

During the past year, I have given 100 percent of my efforts toward making sound decisions for the preservation and betterment of Brigantine. I’ve personally devoted as much time to my political responsibilities as my own business endeavors and I have absolutely no regrets. In fact, I’m very proud of what Dr. Kern, Tony Pullella and I have accomplished and what we have done is simply the beginning of a more open, fair, transparent, fiscally responsible and inclusive government in Brigantine.

It is ironic now that others speak about making the very same changes that we’ve initiated and carried out.   Plagiarism is certainly a form of flattery. The New Republicans speak of “change,” but they are the very same people representing a government to benefit a select few. The taxpayers of our island have had enough. I applaud some of my fellow councilmen who have begun to see this light. Their recent support and friendship is greatly appreciated. Yes, I did say that. Just because a group of individuals may have opposing views doesn’t mean they shouldn’t work together as a team. Different viewpoints and open, fair debate will ultimately lead to sound decisions. If we all thought the same way, nothing would ever change. I applaud my fellow councilmen for proudly standing up for what they believe in.

Our work is not done. In fact, it’s never done. Positive change is still needed on a daily basis and I hope that the stakeholders of Brigantine continue to support the efforts that the Pullella/Kern/Schaffer team has made toward making our island a Better Brigantine. More importantly, I hope the voters recognize that this is only the beginning of a great future and continue to support the team that truly has given them a say in our government. If you look at the facts and changes that have been made just this past year, you will recognize the vast accomplishments and strides that have occurred. Positive momentum is essential and I will continue to support the team who has not only made positive changes, but the team who intends to further those changes well into the future.

In closing, my current business demands are temporary and in the coming year, I must devote my attention toward those efforts as well as my responsibilities to the constituents of Brigantine, specifically the 4th Ward, which I will continue to serve throughout the end of my current term. I vow to complete this term with the same dedication I have always demonstrated and I hope to someday return to Brigantine government.

In the interim, I will remain active in the community and stand behind the individuals who I believe represent the best interests of all stakeholders of our beautiful island. I treasure the experiences of this past year and also the relationships and new friendships that I’ve developed. With or without politics, many of those friendships will last a lifetime and for that I am very grateful.
