GALLOWAY – When Jesus Amparo moved to the United States from the Dominican Republic in 1984, he dreamed of becoming rich.

Today, the Hamilton Township business owner – like others grappling with an enduring economic downturn – said he would simply like to “pay my bills and feed my family” – wife Angelica Sanchez and four children. “I don’t need to be rich.”

This week, the entrepreneur will open his newest apparel store, Sneaker House Outlet, in the Super Foodtown shopping center in Smithville. The 2,300-square-foot shop, formerly the site of Sherlock’s Books, features brand-name sneakers (Puma, Nike, Reebok, Adidas, Fila) and clothing (Roca Wear, Baby Phat, Apple Barrel, Timberland) aimed at children, teens and young adults.

Amparo said his prices are more than competitive; no pair of sneakers costs more than $39.95, and some generic brands go for as little as $15 and $20. He also sells boots, socks, hosiery and leggings, and other accessories.

Amparo operated similar stores in Pleasantville and Egg Harbor City. If the new location does well, he may take over the empty store adjacent to his. The store was open in the week preceding his grand opening, and Amparo said foot traffic was heavy, but sales were light.

“January is always a slow month, right after Christmas; people have already spent their money,” he said. He looks forward to a surge as consumers discover the new location, and as spring and summer approach.

Amparo said he is a student of theology who would like to pastor his own church one day. As for the future of their family business, “We hope it to grow,” he said. “We trust in the Lord.”

The Sneaker House Outlet is open 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays, 9:30 a.m.-8 p.m.Tuesdays-Saturdays and closed Sundays. For information, call (609) 652-5795.
