Retired county CFO to be interim administrator

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Cape May County’s retired longtime chief financial officer, Ed Grant Jr., has been tapped to temporarily take over county administrator duties. He officially begins Friday, May 18.

Freeholder director Gerald Thornton has been serving as acting administrator since Steve O’Connor announced in early April he would resign. O’Connor took a position as interim executive director of the South Jersey Economic Development District, an agency that serves Cape May, Cumberland and Salem counties, and has fallen into financial woes.

River Adventure opening Memorial Day weekend

Morey’s Piers plans to introduce a new family waterpark experience at Raging Waters. River Adventure, a renovated incarnation of the Lazy River.

The new attraction features rock facades and formations all around the river with waterfalls, seating outcrops for mid-river relaxation, geysers and a grotto.

Communication and art students awarded at Atlantic Cape

MAYS LANDING — Atlantic Cape Community College hosted the fifth annual Communication and Art Awards ceremony May 4 at the Mays Landing Campus. Mike Richman of WAYV’s Mike and Diane Morning Show and Chelsea Pizzi, Atlantic Cape’s public relations and social media specialist, served as emcees. The evening included an appearance by NBC 40 meteorologist Dan Skeldon, who was also honored as an outstanding media professional.

Coastal water monitoring program begins May 14

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — The 2012 Coastal Water Monitoring Program will begin on May 14 and continue through Sept. 4 in Cape May County. The Cooperative Coastal Monitoring Program is being conducted through the Health Department, in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Cape May County Director Kevin Thomas said, “The monitoring program reaffirms our commitment to the surveillance and protection of the public’s health, coastal environment and natural resources.”

Freeholders host student government day

The Cape May County Board of Freeholders hosted the annual student government day on April 24, in which 16 students from county High Schools participated.  The day started with a demonstration from Sheriff Gary Schaffer and the Sheriff’s K-9 Unit. With the students are, from left, Sheriff’s Officers Teasenfitz and Harris, Sheriff Gary G. Schaffer, Sgt. Perednas and Sheriff’s Officer Norcross.  The Cape May County Board of Freeholders hosted the annual student government day on April 24, in which 16 students from county High Schools participated. CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – The Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders hosted the annual student government day on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 as part of the county’s National County Government Month celebration.

Sixteen students representing eight Cape May County High Schools participated in the event, which concluded with the students conducting both the caucus and regular meetings of the Freeholders after spending the day learning about the role of county government.
