Soccer registration
The Lower Township Department of Parks & Recreation is offering a spring soccer program for boys and girls in kindergarten (child must turn five by Oct. 1) thru sixth grade. This program will be designed to teach children the basic fundamentals of soccer. Practices will be held during the week according to your child’s coach’s schedule. Games will be played primarily on Saturday mornings with the possibility of some weeknight evening games. Participants are recommended to wear cleats and must wear shin guards to all practices and games. Please bring a drink to all games and practices as well. Registrations will be held Feb. 18 – March 4. Fees are as follows: Residents-$15 for 1 child, $25 for 2 and $30 for 3 or more children. Non-resident fee is $20 for 1 Child, $30 for 2 children & $35 for 3 or more. For more information, contact the Lower Township Recreation Center at 886-7880 ext. 0.

Lenten suppers and services

The First Presbyterian Church of Cape May will be hosting weekly Lenten suppers and services on Thursday evenings from 6 to 7:15 p.m. from Feb. 23 through March 29. A soup and bread supper will be offered at 6 p.m. with a service of reflection and worship following the meal. Members and friends of the church will provide music and personal testimonies. Historical Society celebrates black history

The Greater Cape May Historical Society will meet at the Physick Estate Carriage House, 1048 Washington Street, on Feb. 23 at 10:30 a.m. Bernadette Matthews will be the featured speaker on “Wendel White’s Schools for the Colored: Highlighting the Life and Soul of the Frank Street School.” Schools for the Colored depicts the landscape and architecture of historically segregated schools in northern states in 50 photographs by nationally renowned New Jersey photographer Wendel White. Also included is an exhibit highlighting the life and soul of Cape May’s Franklin Street School. Free admission. Co-sponsored by the Center for Community Arts.  Light refreshments.

Kiwanis spaghetti dinner
The Kiwanis Club of Cape May will host its popular annual spaghetti dinner on Saturday, Feb. 25 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at their clubhouse at 1041 Beach Avenue. You may eat in at the clubhouse or arrange for take out by telephoning 884–8888 that day. Each meal include a salad, roll, beverage (eat in only), and desert. The cost is $10 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under. All proceeds from the dinner will be used to fund the many Kiwanis programs and activities with area schools and other children of our community. Enjoy a good meal while helping us continue our good work with the children of the Greater Cape May area!

Kids Can Expo
The Nature Center of Cape May will again sponsor the Kids Can Expo, a children’s festival that features hands-on activities, exhibits, touch-tanks, crafts, face painting, dance troupes and so much more, on Sunday, Feb. 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cape May City Elementary School (921 Lafayette Street in Cape May). There is a $6 charge per person; children under two are admitted free. There is also a nominal charge for food and some crafts. Social club for seniors

Our Lady Star of the Sea Church is sponsoring a new friendly social club for seniors of all faiths. The first event is scheduled for Leap Day, Feb. 29 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Parish Hall. A complimentary lunch will be served. Call Mary Lou at 884-0522 to make reservations.

Learn about ‘The March King’

Why did John Philip Sousa like Cape May so much and what kept him writing all those rousing marches? On Saturday, March 3, kids will have fun learning about Sousa, known as "The March King," and Victorian popular music with educational, hands-on activities, at the second of four Kids Winter Workshops - a new program of crafts and stories for children sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) and presented by the Friends of the Physick Estate. The Friends of the Physick Estate will present this fun and educational program especially suited for children aged 7-10, from 10 a.m. to noon at the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. Admission is $10; $7 for MAC members. Coast Guard boating safety classes

A one-day boating safety course will be offered on the following Saturdays: March 10, April 7, May 5, 19, and June 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Price Hall located at Academy and Seashore Roads in Cold Spring. Students will receive an official New Jersey Safe Boating Certificate, which is required by law for any person 16 years of age or older who intends to operate a vessel 12 feet and over, or personal watercraft. Course fee is $45. Traditional Jazz
The Cape May Traditional Jazz Society will present Midiri Bros Dixieland Jazz, featuring Joe Midiri on clarinet and his outstanding group, on Sunday, March 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. at VFW Post 386, 419 Congress St., Cape May. The “Al Harrison Dixieland Band,” with Al Harrison on trumpet, Gil Bennett on clarinet, Fred Scott on trombone, Ed Wise on bass, Lew Leabman on drums, Franny Smith on banjo, will appear Sunday, April 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance (884-7961) and $15 at the door. $10 CMTJS member price. Proceeds are donated to the Food Bank of Southern Jersey to help support local needs.

Broadway bus trip

The South Jersey Chapter of the JW Hallahan Alumnae Association is sponsoring a Broadway theater bus trip to “Anything Goes” for the Wednesday, May 16 matinee. Cost is $185 and includes roundtrip transportation, lunch at the Salmon River restaurant, theater ticket, and snacks and prizes on the bus. Bus departs from various Parkway points. All proceeds benefit the Tuition Assistance Fund. For reservations or information, call Nancy at 263-6974.

Pilates classes

The Lower Township Department of Parks and Recreation is now offering an ongoing walk-in pilates classes. This program is a low impact extraordinarily effective exercise class that firms, lengthens and shapes muscles to their optimal form. Classes are being held Wednesday evenings at 5 p.m. and Thursday mornings at 9:30 a.m. Cost is $3 per class. For more information call 886-7880 ext. 0.

Yoga classes

The Lower Township Department of Parks and Recreation is offering ongoing walk in adult yoga classes. Classes are held on Tuesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Lower Township Recreation Center. The fee for this class is $5 per class. This yoga practice is offered as a co-ed beginners level, awareness and experience of yoga. No yoga experience required, all levels are welcome.  Bring a blanket or a yoga mat to class and wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing.  For more information, call 886-7880 ext. 0.
