Cape May Music Festival opens next week

CAPE MAY – The New York Chamber Ensemble and Atlantic Brass Band will highlight the first week of the 24th Cape May Music Festival.

The festival is presented by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) and offers three weeks of orchestral and chamber music performances and Irish, country, jazz and brass band music. It opens on Monday, May 26 and continues through Thursday, June 13.

Opening the festival is the Atlantic Brass Band under the baton of Salvatore Scarpa at 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 26 at the Rotary Bandstand on Lafayette Street between Decatur and Jackson streets. The 35-piece ensemble is an authentic British-style brass band based out of Rowan University in Glassboro.

Bring a lawn chair and enjoy a summer evening of traditional brass music. In case of rain the concert will be moved to Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish Hall. Admission is free.

The New York Chamber Ensemble under the artistic direction of Alan R. Kay returns to the Cape May Music Festival at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28 at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, Washington and Franklin streets. They will perform a harp and voice program entitled "The Heart of the Matter: Beautiful French and American music for instruments and voice," featuring Wonjung Kim, soprano, and Stacey Shames, harp.

The program consists of Saint-Saëns' “Fantaisie for Violin and Harp,” Ravel's “Five Popular Greek Melodies,” Jimmy Roberts' “The Heart of the Matter,” and Debussy's “Trio for Flute, Viola and Harp.”

The Cape May Music Festival was the winner of the 2012 People Choice Awards for "Favorite Music Festival," administered by the Discover Jersey Arts program of ArtPride New Jersey. Now in its fifth year, the People's Choice Awards honor the work of arts organizations and the devotion of their fans. More than 60 nonprofit arts groups were nominated by members of the arts community in 14 categories.
