CAPE MAY – Nature and attention to detail continue to inspire artists in the Harbor Gallery at the Nature Center of Cape May, 1600 Delaware Avenue in Cape May.

Local artists Peg Dittmar and Sandy Maloney bring their expertise and passion for birds to this new exhibit. The exhibit will continue through the end of the month. All artwork is for sale, with a portion supporting the Nature Center of Cape May.

Dittmar is known in art circles as the “Painter of Birds.” Her lifelike oil and watercolor paintings of egrets, blue herons, osprey and many other birds attest to this. Dittmar’s interest in these exquisite creatures started when she would vacation in the Keys.

“The egrets would come to the dock for whatever fish treats that were given out,” she said. “I was able to photograph intimately each bird feather. They actually became pets and would come every day waiting for their handout.”

Dittmar’s bird paintings have been in many shows and have won more than 53 awards. Most recently she was accepted in the juried show at the home of John J. Audubon in Pennsylvania. The Noyes Museum has been exhibiting her birds each year at the Associate Artists Show since 2007. Her most recent awards were from the National Arts Program in which she won Best of Show, First Prize and People’s Choice.

Freelance photographer Maloney’s interest in photography started over 20 years ago with her first SLR camera. Retirement in 2003 allowed her to develop a real passion for her art.

Living on the Cape May Harbor offers Maloney a daily dose of inspiration along with her trips to Florida. She is adept at capturing unique moments in nature, as seen in “Blue Herons Nesting.”

Specializing in nature and macro photography, she uses natural on-location lighting. Mainly self-taught, Maloney has worked with well-know photographers throughout the United States to hone her skills. Her work can also be seen in local magazines, non-profit publications, and marinas.

The Harbor Gallery is dedicated to providing a venue for local nature inspired artists, with a new exhibit featuring two artists each month.  A meet the artist reception is scheduled for the first Friday of each month at 6 p.m. For more information call 609-884-2736.
