Vigorous assists with stranded Carnival Triumph

Coast Guard photo by Lt. Commander Paul McConnell The Coast Guard Cutter Vigorous, which has its home port in Cape May, has been assisting the Carnival Triumph since Monday night.

The 893-foot cruise ship lost power for several days after an engine-room fire stranded the ship in the Gulf of Mexico on Feb. 10.

The Cutter Vigorous began escorting the cruise ship Monday night after tugs began towing it toward Mobile, Ala., which is approximately 270 miles north.

The Triumph reported a fire in the aft engine room in the morning on Feb. 10, which was extinguished by the ships fire control system. No injuries were reported.

The ship continues to operate on backup generators.
