MAURICE RIVER TOWNSHIP—A 20-year-old Cape May man was pronounced dead and a 19-year-old Villas woman is in critical condition after a single-vehicle crash on Route 47 Thursday night.

Michael Hankins, 20, was driving southbound near mile marker 29.6 around 9:50 p.m. when he attempted to pass another vehicle and entered the northbound lane, said Sgt. Adam Grossman of the New Jersey State Police.

After entering the northbound lane, Hankins hit his brakes to avoid a head-on collision with a motorcycle coming towards his 2002 Chevy Camaro.

Grossman said that Hankins then lost control of the car, which traveled off the road and hit a metal clothing donation box and a utility pole before it stopped in a wooded area.

The accident left Hankins entrapped in the vehicle. The passenger, Aimee Govani, was partially ejected from the Camaro.

Multiple fire and emergency medical service departments arrived on the scene, Grossman said. Govani was airlifted to AtlaniCare Regional Medical Center and is in critical condition. It has been reported that the road was closed in both directions while Govani and Hankins were extracted from the vehicle.

Hankins was taken to Inspira Medical Center in Vineland where he was pronounced dead.

Grossman said the crash is still under investigation.
