UPDATED: Emergency at Coast Guard base

An active duty member of the Coast Guard has climbed the water tower at the training center in Cape May.

Emergency crews are on the scene and traffic is being turned away. Only essentual personnel are being allowed on the base.


A spokesperson with the Coast Guard said Thursday that an active duty service member climbed the water tower without permission this afternoon. He has been up there since before 2 p.m.

Cape May County Office of Emergency Management, Cape May firefighters, and Coast Guard fire, police and ambulances are on the scene. Police have set up a media staging area about a block from the base, in the east side of Cape May.

Cape May is home to the Coast Guard’s basic training center, as well as a small boat station and other units.
