When you first move into a new apartment or dorm room, don’t be discouraged by the bland look. It will definitely seem a little cold at first with all the bare walls and emptiness, but that won’t last long if you get down to decorating.
With a little creativity and know-how decorating, you can turn your college living space into a cozy and fun environment. I will be living in my same apartment from last year, so I have some great decorating experience and tips. My roommates and I love our apartment—it’s too cute. I will share some of my favorite decorating ideas for all those moving into a new living space at college.
My all-time favorite part about our apartment is that there are lights strung up around the perimeter of almost every room in the house. Strung lights make a great decorating item. They add a great touch of brightness to a dull feeling room—they’re definitely a pretty sight too. I have pink ones in my room at school and it’s so relaxing and soothing to sit in my pink-lighted room when I need some peace and quiet. The pink color they give off is really pretty too.
Also try to incorporate some bright colors when you’re decorating to liven up your living space. Having color adds to that homey feeling everyone wants; and you can customize your color scheme when decorating to match your personal sense of style. I’d suggest getting colored rugs to put in different rooms and a stylish comforter for your bed. Also, hang some colorful curtains in your room to make your room feel more warm and cozy. Consider getting a rug with a pattern on it for your room—don’t be afraid to get too wild with your décor. I have a really cute patterned area rug in my room, and it really spices up the whole room.
You must decorate your walls. Hang a lot of pictures. From photos of friends and family to inspiring quotes and wall decals, wall décor will undoubtedly add that finishing touch to your living space. Try hanging a string of photos along one of your walls. Nail up a clothes line and clip some of your favorite photos along it using clothes pins. It looks so cute and trendy.
Wall decals are another great decorating tool. We have quite a few decals throughout our apartment and they look great. Everyone who comes into our apartment compliments the walls because of all the decals and pictures we’ve hung.
My last two decorating tips are to have candles and flowers around. Place a few candles throughout your house; put them wherever you think they fit. Lit candles give off a comforting vibe and obviously smell delightful. They’re physically appealing too. For the flowers, I’d suggest getting pretty fake ones of your choice and a cute vase to put them in. Flowers are a perfect room decorator.
I hope you got some good decorating ideas and are inspired enough to make your new living space one that you’ll love.
