MARGATE – Cheryl and Chris Dearth founded Making Precious Strides, Inc., a 501c3 group dedicated to funding research to find a cure for Hunter’s Syndrome, a rare disease for which there is currently no cure. They hope funds raised by MPS will some day unlock the mystery to Hunter’s Syndrome, or Mucopolysaccharidosis II, the disease that the Dearths’ son Zach was diagnosed with in 2005, when he was 3 years old. It is an inherited disorder.

This Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. the Log Cabin on Jerome Avenue in Margate will host the annual ZachFest in honor of Zach Dearth who is now 7 years old and doing his best to try and just be a normal boy getting ready to go to school in the fall but who still suffers from a sometimes debilitating disease with no cure in sight. The disorder prevents the breakdown of complex carbohydrates called mucopolysaccharides due to a deficient enzyme. A build up of the mucopolysaccharides in various organs throughout the body can be life threatening.

ZachFest is an all-ages event that will be held rain or shine. There will be live music from The Groove, food, drinks, an auction and a Kids Zone. Tickets are $20 for adults in advance and $25 at the door. Children 4-12 are $10. Children 3 and under are free. To purchase tickets, call (609) 513-5314 or inquire at Maynard’s Café or Robert’s Place in Margate.
