Postcard contest seeks scenes from Ventnor

“Ventnor West at Night” is a postcard entry by Ventnor resident Joyleen Steinen.
VENTNOR – Pick a scene, any scene. It just might be put on a postcard.

Ventnor is Art, an organization of local artists, is holding a contest to feature 10 local artists on 1,000 sets of postcards depicting their favorite Ventnor scene.

Local businesses are sponsoring the printing.

Mark Hills of Ventnor, the director of Ventnor is Art, said the group is working toward helping artists promote themselves through a website and events. He said the group meets regularly and is seeking nonprofit status.

“We came up with the idea because we are trying to create projects in Ventnor that businesses in Ventnor can support and that artists in Ventnor can get exposure in Ventnor without having to have a lot of out-of-pocket expenses,” Hills said Friday, Feb. 10. “We’re trying to take care of the business of art so they can concentrate on the art and showing their art.”

Hills said artists can use any medium but the finished piece must be photographed or digitized and sent to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

He said the artwork should feature be anything that depicts Ventnor.

“Basically there are no postcards of Ventnor, so these will be representational of the things we love about the city,” Hills said.

The deadline for submissions is Feb. 29.

The 10 winners will be featured on the postcards and at an exhibit and unveiling in March at the Ventnor Library and Cultural Arts Center, Hills said. The 10,000 postcards will be distributed through the businesses that sponsor their printing.

“They’ll be traditional postcards to be used as souvenirs or pieces of art basically being created by artist. We’ve had some beautiful entries already. On the back will be a biography of the artist and information on the sponsoring business,” Hills said.

The group’s next meeting is 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19 at Malelani Café, 5205 Atlantic Ave.

The group will also hold a Chew on Art event featuring spoken-word poetry, prose and music 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26 at Malelani Café.

Contest details can be found at www.ventnorisart.com.
