VENTNOR – Kindergarteners and preschoolers at Ventnor Elementary School met the Cat in the Hat Tuesday, Feb. 25 in preparation for Read Across America Day, held annually on Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

The New Jersey Education Association arranged for the visit by the favorite character of beloved children’s author Theodor Seuss Geisel.

Read Across America Day is a reading motivation program that calls for children, teachers, librarians, parents, grandparents, and members of the community to get excited about reading.

Because Dr. Seuss’ 110th birthday is on Sunday this year, children across the country will celebrate reading on Monday, March 3.

The theme for this year’s event is Dr. Seuss and “Yertle the Turtle.” Children at the Ventnor Educational Community Complex are being asked to wear something green.

The Turtle Singer, Karen Buckley, will perform during three grade-level assemblies, and Mayor Michael Bagnell, police and firefighters, and members of Hadassah will read to students in their classrooms.
