Lucy's mysteries to be unveiled tonight on Travel Channel

MARGATE – The mysteries of Margate’s iconic mammoth structure will be revealed at 9 p.m. tonight as the Travel Channel premiers its new series, “Monumental Mysteries.”

The opening episode unveils the story behind the 65-foot tall Lucy the Elephant, which was originally constructed in 1881 by land speculator James V. Lafferty Jr. to attract buyers to South Atlantic City, now Margate.

The show, hosted by Don Wildman, visits monuments, gravestones historical sites throughout the country to reveal the inner mysteries about events, notorious crimes, scandals, disasters and triumphs.

Lucy joins other locations on the show, including Ellis Island, Grand Canyon and the Falling Star Sculpture in Alabama, a memorial to the only person ever be hit by a meteorite.

Visitors to the Jersey Shore can visit Lucy the Elephant 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday from mid-June through Labor Day. Last tour of the day is at 7:30 p.m.
