Sgt. Charles T. Adams Sgt. Charles T. Adams LONGPORT – The borough police and fire departments are mourning the loss of one of their own today following the death of Longport Police Sgt. Charles T. Adams, 53, of Egg Harbor Township who was killed in a motorcycle accident in Franklin Township Monday, Aug. 25.

According to Longport Police Chief Vincent Pacentrilli, Adams, a 21-year veteran of the force, was out for a motorcycle ride, enjoying a beautiful day when he was involved in a crash on Harding Highway at the intersection of Tuckahoe Road. The accident occurred at 4:15 p.m. when an elderly woman drove her SUV into the path of Adams’ Harley Davidson, Pacentrilli said.

According to a press release from the Franklin Township Police department, Adams was traveling west on Harding Highway. As he proceeded through the intersection a red Chevrolet SUV entered the intersection and attempted to make a left turn from Tuckahoe Road onto Harding Highway.

Adams was ejected from the motorcycle. When police arrived, he was unconscious and unresponsive.

He was airlifted by New Jersey State Police helicopter to Cooper University Hospital in Camden where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the SUV, whose name was not released by the Franklin Township Police Department, was taken to Inspira Medical Center in Vineland for unspecified injuries.

“He was a passionate motorcycle rider, and was instrumental in starting our motorcycle unit here in Longport,” Pacentrilli said. “He was a hard-working and dedicated cop – a real cop’s cop.”

Pacentrilli said the department had just received its second stock of motorcycles replacing those that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy. Adams started the motorcycle unit in 2009, Pacentrilli said.

“That was his baby. We had just gotten the new motorcycles detailed just the way he wanted it,” Pacentrilli said.

Members of the department were still in shock Tuesday morning.

“It’s just starting to hit us now,” he said. “Everyone is in shock. We lost one of our brothers.”

Pacentrilli said he was the one who notified Adams’ wife of about 10 years, Sarah, that he had passed away. The couple did not have children.

Funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.

Longport Mayor Nicholas Russo said Adams was also a 30-year member of the borough’s volunteer fire department, where at one point he served as its captain.

“He was always involved in our community events, the Police Unity Tour and distributing turkeys to families of fallen officers in Philadelphia,” Russo said. “He was very well respected by his peers.”

Russo said the outpouring of support from other law enforcement agencies is profound.

“When you consider the professional side and the fraternal side of law enforcement, Sgt. Adams excelled in both aspects,” Russo said. “He was an excellent motorcycle rider and I understand the accident was unavoidable.”

Russo said that given the sudden deaths of residents Anne Leeds and philanthropist Lewis Katz, “it has not been a very good year for Longport.”

The New Jersey State Police, Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, Franklin Township Ambulance, Buena Borough Ambulance, Buena Borough Police Department, Forest Grove Fire Department and the state Department of Transportation assisted at the accident scene.
