Building is the logical choice

To the editor:
Five years ago I was elected to the City Commission and chosen mayor of this great city. It has always been my goal to work hard to ensure a bright future for the residents of Margate.

Together we successfully fought for the ability of our citizens to have a direct voice in city government through referendum. I respectfully ask for your help in approving the building department ordinance that is on the Nov. 6 ballot.  As I have stated in the past, I will not support extending the lease at the building department's current location. We have already paid $798,000 in rent and have nothing to show for it.

Moving the building department to a city-owned location next to City Hall is both logical and financially sound. If approved, the bond ordinance would allow Margate to build a new building to house the building department. The bond payment is essentially the same annually as the rent, but in 12 years we would own the new building free and clear.  Savings would then accrue annually forever.

As you consider this bond ordinance, help me ensure the financial future of our children and grandchildren.

Vote yes.

Mayor Mike Becker
