Jonell’s Weaving Salon

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – The wood floors and rich paint colors set the stage as clients enter Jonell’s Weaving Salon, set to open Friday, Oct. 12 in Risley Commons.

“Prepare to be pampered,” states the brochure of services.

The layout of the new salon, owned by brother-sister duo Ricardo Jones and Tanesha Purnell, seems to meet that promise. The upscale salon offers private styling rooms where clients can relax and get their hair done.

“We have clients going through chemotherapy or with alopecia. Privacy is very important to them,” said Jones during a tour of the salon on Monday, Oct. 8.

“What we are offering is very unique and unusual for a weaving salon,” he said. “Our clients will get one-on-one attention. If we can make someone look better, we can make them feel better. That’s our goal.”

The salon offers a range of services including typical haircuts and styling outside of weaving as well, but Jones said the way they approach weaves will set them apart from competitors.

The human hair imported from Brazil and China is sewn onsite and can be as custom as a client wants, he said. “Within five minutes a client can have their custom track made.”

The human hair weaves last longer, up to six weeks as opposed to two weeks, he said, and is a better quality.

“They can be washed and styled like normal hair. You can also reuse them.”

Hair weaving dates back to 18th century France and is still popular today.

Purnell, who graduated from Pleasantville High School but now lives in Bridgeton, received training at Shore Beauty School and worked for years at Classic Salon. Jones, also of Pleasantville, has a business degree from Kean University and handles the operation of the salon.

A full retail section will great clients and customers at the front entrance, where they can purchase a variety of lengths of hair or order custom pieces. The hair comes in multiple colors and styles including straight, body wave, kinky curl, natural wave, deep wave, super wave, natural, straight, curly, deep curl or Roman curl.

Jones said with the ability to sell and sew in different lengths, the client will receive a full, more natural look; and one need not have much hair in order to receive a weave.

“We had one client that had gray hair that was no more than a half-inch long come in the other day,” he said. “When Tanesha was finished with her, she looked like she was 20 years younger.”

Jonell’s Weaving Salon is at 6106 Black Horse Pike, Suite A-3 in Risley Commons. Hours are 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays. For information, call (609) 277-7868 or see
