Genuardi's closing Dec. 15, laying off 90 employees

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – Genuardi's grocery store on Fire Road is scheduled to close its doors Dec. 15, according to store manager Paul McCloskey, and approximately 90 employees are expected to lose their jobs.

"It's a total shock," McClosky said of parent-company Safeway's decision to close the store. In January, Safeway announced that it would put its Genuardi's properties up for sale and wait until a new buyer could be secured rather than close the stores.

Shoppers at the local store may have noticed discounted item and empty shelves in the past few weeks, but McCloskey said that was the result of a rejuvenation of the store.

"I just transferred down here. Nothing had been done for eight months, so we were resetting the store and ordering a thousand new items. I don't know why they would go to the cost and effort to fill the store just to announce that it's closing."

Despite the pending closure, McCloskey said the store will continue to order new items, fully stock the shelves and staff the location up until December. At that point, there will be sales to clear out inventory in advance of the closure, he said.

The Barnegat store is also closing, McCloskey said.
