EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – For Jamie Corpes, getting something as permanent as a tattoo should be a well-researched decision.

The tattoo artist said it should be important to clients that the individuals marking up their skin are competent and comfortable in their work environments.

Laura Stetser/The Inkuisition Tattoo and Piercing Studio opened in July inside a renovated space in the Cardiff section of Egg Harbor Township. “It can be stressful for the artists to sit for hours working on a single tattoo, let alone while getting micromanaged by people who don’t tattoo or don’t understand what goes into the work. It can make them crazy. There is a lot of brain activity that goes into what we do,” she said, noting that her new tattoo and piercing studio aims to change that typical environment that she has experienced at other typical studios.

Corpes, who has been tattooing for more than 10 years, is the owner of the The Inkuisition Tattoo and Piercing Studio which opened in July inside a renovated space at 6422 Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township. She said as a tattoo artist herself, she hopes to be a more efficient and better owner.

The upscale 2,600 square-foot studio features private rooms for services as well as digital portfolios of the artists that work for Corpes.  Artists Lexi Perez, Vinny Ferragame, Dominic Cordova and Mike Kite are part of her team, all of whom she said have some background in the arts.

“It is critical to be home to some of the most respected and popular tattoo and piercing artists in the Middle Atlantic region, and we have them.”

She said each artist, each of whom she has known for years, has a devoted following but are welcoming new clients as well. The waiting area of the studio features digital portfolios of each that are updated frequently.

The studio also uses a client scheduling system that keeps track of client preferences as well as a customer rewards program. More similar to a hair studio, the clients are also offered a selection of refreshments during appointments.

Corpes said tattoos are often something people want to collect.

“The first one is kind of nerve-wracking,” said Corpes, of Northfield. “It’s the permanence of it, the commitment and the pain aspect. But after the first one, all of that fear is gone.”

Client Joseph Benson, 29, said he views his tattoos as just that, a collection. He had emailed back and forth with Corpes to design a grandfather clock that she was going to tattoo on his forearm.

“I thought the clock was a good one to add,” he said as Corpes started to transfer the sketch onto his arm.

Corpes said there has been a growing demand for a more high-end tattoo studio.

“As tattoos become more popular and mainstream with nearly 25 percent of Americans having one, the time is now for a major paradigm shift in the industry with the introduction of an upscale studio,” said Corpes in her official press release. “Men and women alike who are seeking a tattoo or piercing as well as the artists are demanding an upscale atmosphere that is not only clean and welcoming but also discreetly private. That is exactly what The Inkuisition offers.”

Starting Aug. 29, The Inkuisition will also offer non-laser tattoo removal service called Tatt2Away.

A grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 6. Live entertainment and radio station presence is planned. Admission is free.
