EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – Egg Harbor Township High School hosted the Share the Keys Parent Teen Driver Safety program Tuesday, Feb. 7 in the school’s new auditorium.  More than 150 parents and teens attended.

“We are pleased with the turnout, feedback has been positive and we are hoping to host the program at least annually and include EHT teens next time,” said Karen Semet, physical education supervisor and driver education teacher.

Mainland Regional High School students volunteered to present Tuesday evening.

While co-presenting with her mother on the importance of parent to parent agreements, MRHS student Megan Lavery thanked the community for their support.

“It really helps to know that other parents are interested in our wellbeing and keeping track of us,” she said. “It makes it easier to make good decisions and ask for help.”

Sgt. Steve Swankoski of the Egg Harbor Township Police Department presented the section on enforcing the graduated drivers license restrictions at home.

“It’s important to set clear restrictions and to be consistent and follow through with consequences,” Swankoski told parents.

He cited statistics from the New Jersey Teen Study Commission Report.

“Forty percent of all fatal crashes involving teens occur at night, so the simple act of enforcing the nighttime curfew could be the difference between life and death,” he said.

Share the Keys is a research based, data-driven program designed to reduce teen crashes by increasing parental knowledge and involvement.

Professionals from area high schools attended training back in November and students attended special training for teens in January. The South Jersey Traffic Safety Alliance is the agency responsible for Share the Keys.

The next training for professionals is Wednesday, Feb. 29 at Martins Catering, Route 40, Landisville.  Teen training is being planned for late March.
