EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – Donna Burns, organizer of Friends of the Egg Harbor Township Dog Park, is not quite ready to celebrate yet.

While it seems the long-proposed dog park has finally found its home inside the Egg Harbor Township Police Athletic League’s Ready to Ride II Equestrian Trails and Park on the corner of Leap and Ridge avenues, the nitty-gritty details over the lease between PAL and the township had yet to be put to rest as of Tuesday, Sept. 11.

“We’re not in the homestretch yet,” she said of the park that has been in the works for nearly six years and almost seemed like it would never become a reality.

Plans for it to be placed on county-owned land along Pine Avenue were shot down, as was a pitch to put the park on township-owned property behind Home Depot near the Shires development.

But by all accounts, including comments of support from the township and PAL’s leadership, the park seems to have found its home in the middle of the township and the organization will host its first large fundraiser Friday, Sept. 21.

A “Pawsta and More Dinner” is 6-9 p.m. at the Mays Landing Country Club, 1855 Cates Road in Hamilton Township. In addition to pasta dishes, the evening features other food selections, park information, a cash bar, a DJ, dancing, Chinese and live auctions and prizes.

“We have a lot of support, and this is a chance for people to meet each other and socialize and hear more about what we have planned,” she said.

While she won’t breathe easy just yet, Burns said she is very appreciative of the township’s support as well.

“We are very happy that the township has been so generous. We have a nice place to put the park and it’s a great thing for our community and our furry friends. Egg Harbor Township is the heart of Atlantic County and now we can say we are pet-friendly as well.”

Tickets are $25 per person. Proceeds going toward the cost of building the park.
