Police involved in standoff in West Atlantic City section

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - A 49-year-old man with a history of violence who involved police in a lengthy standoff Tuesday, Nov. 6 in the West Atlantic City section of the township was taken into custody at approximately 11:30 p.m., police said.

Frank Waggenhoffer of Egg Harbor Township was arrested after Atlantic County SWAT team members made entry into the Black Horse Pike home where he had barricaded himself, police said.

Waggenhoffer was charged with making terroristic threats, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, resisting arrest and simple assault. Bail was set by Municipal Court Judge H. R. Switzer at $50,000 cash.

Waggenhoffer is currently undergoing evaluation at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center City Campus prior to being committed to the Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility in Mays Landing. 

According to police, a call came in at approximately 3:48 p.m. stating that a man was allegedly threatening to kill someone with a knife inside residence in the West Plaza Place neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers learned that the male was believed to be in possession of a shotgun. The alleged victim had fled the home prior to police arrival.

Police closed a portion of the Black Horse Pike and evacuated neighboring properties while the investigation and nearly 7½ hours of negotiations by the Egg Harbor Township Police Department’s Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Team were under way.

Egg Harbor Township police were also assisted by the Pleasantville Police Department, Atlantic City Police Department SWAT team, the West Atlantic City Volunteer Fire Company, the Egg Harbor Township Ambulance Squad and AtlantiCare Paramedics.
