EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – A Somers Point man and a Northfield man were arrested for allegedly stealing items from a car parked at the Shore Mall in the Cardiff section of the township on Saturday, Nov. 17, police said.

Christopher Way, 21, of Somers Point and John Monzo, 22, of Northfield were arrested at approximately 5:18 p.m. by the Egg Harbor Township Police officers after off-duty Northfield Police Officer Martin Peary observed the men walking through the parking lot, checking for unlocked vehicle doors, and entering at least one and removing property.

Way was charged with burglary, theft and conspiracy. Monzo was charged with receiving stolen property and conspiracy. Both were released on summonses pending a court appearance.

Egg Harbor Township Officers Anthony Venuto, Edward Bertino and Mark Mensch responded, located the two suspects and took both into custody. The officers also recovered property they believed to be stolen.

Detectives Mark Wagner and Heather Stumpf of the Egg Harbor Township Police Criminal Investigations Bureau later identified the owner of the recovered property and returned it.

The department is advising the public to make sure vehicle doors are locked at all times, even if they are in front of a home or in the driveway. They also reminded residents not to leave any valuables inside vehicles, whether locked or not, as car theft is a type of crime that is preventable.
