EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – With the dismantling of portions of the Shore Mall already underway, the staff here had to scramble quicker than expected to find a new home for a time capsule that was buried here in 1974.
“It's been a long crazy day of ups and downs here at Shore Mall,” Dawn Cooper, who works in marketing and promotions for the mall posted this evening on the mall’s Facebook page. “We were told that the area the Time Capsule was in will be under construction a bit faster then first thought. The phone calls began! First to June Sheridan, Township Historian; Lynn Wood, Township Historical Society; and to Charlene Canale and Cheryl Collins, Atlantic County Historical Society to explain the news for which they quickly were on the way to Shore Mall.”
The group has compiled a few photos of the event along with some documents and information. The capsule has now been turned over the Greate Egg Harbour Township Historical Society and will become an exhibit in the near future, she said.
The capsule was dedicated and sealed March 20, 1974 and was to be opened in 100 years, Wood explained to The Current.
“However, due to the demolition of the Shore Mall, the workers needed to move it. It was hard to get to and surrounded by concrete so the workers had to open the capsule,” she said, explaining that the way the capsule was made, it was sealed in concrete under the floor, so in order to tear up the floor, the contents had to be removed.
Some of the items held within the capsule will not be opened until the designated time in 2074, such as letters to family and listening to the reel to reel tape, she said.
“Many people remember its dedication and remember walking over the brass plaque that was in the floor since 1974. I’m sure people will want to know what happened to it,” Wood said.
The Greate Egg Harbor Township Historical Society Museum will be creating a Shore Mall display, complete with the contents and a scrapbook of its finer years.
Cooper said she expects visitors to be intrigued by the upcoming exhibit.
“Whether you were there on the day it was placed or forever curious of its contents...please be sure to visit the display once it is ready,” she wrote.
