Students at the Alder Avenue Middle School who are participants in the “All Hands On Deck” mini-grant provided by the Egg Harbor Township Education Foundation enjoyed a presentation about the sinking of the Titanic on the 101st anniversary of the event.

John Dilks, an author and former teacher, volunteered his time to speak about one of the little-known heroes of the tragedy, Harold Cottam.

Cottam was the wireless operator of the Carpathia, the ship that rescued the Titanic survivors. The students learned that although Harold Cottam’s shift had ended, he listened one more time to his radio before going to bed. He insisted on waking the captain of the Carpathia, and his efforts no doubt saved hundreds of people who otherwise would have perished.
