EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – The Alder Avenue Middle School has entered a contest to win up to $25,000 to improve its Community Teaching Garden.

The “Seeds of Change” contest will award one $25,000 grant and 15 $10,000 grants to schools or organizations receiving the most votes.

If Alder wins it will use the money to improve the garden located along West Jersey Avenue “to put more fresh fruits and vegetables onto the plates of low-income families.”

If it wins the grand prize of $25,000, the staff and students plan to erect a 33-foot growing dome permitting the production of more than 1,800 pounds of food per year.

Requiring no outside source of energy and only a fraction of the heat used by a regular greenhouse, it will reduce our carbon footprint and provide the optimal environment for year-round harvesting, school officials sais.

If it is the winner of one of the $10,000 grants, the school will construct a farm stand that would “provide gardeners with shelter, storage space, and a place for cleaning and packing their produce.”

Seeds of Change is an organic certified food company that makes consumer rice and sauce products.
