EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - With the current civil war in Syria, the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Egg Harbor Township has been actively involved in fundraising for those affected.

The St. Elpitha Philoptochos organization, the philanthropic arm of the church, has collected $1,000 for the International Orthodox Christian Charities which coordinates relief efforts in catastrophic and war torn areas such as Syria.

Another fundraiser begun by parishioner Faten Dib, with the aid fellow church members, is collecting clothing for the people of Syria.

The campaign, called Hope Relief for Syria on Facebook, has drawn support from people across other states.  Recently, Dib sent a 70-ton container to Syria.  The shipping costs of $5,000 for the container were donated.

On Sunday, Nov. 17, the Sunday School’s youth, middle to high school member were given a special presentation on the Syrian crisis by Tom Papademetriou, associate professor of historical studies at Richard Stockton College, and Faten Dib’s husband Dr. Haitham R. Dib, a prominent area cardiologist.

Papademetriou described the history of Christianity and rise of Islamic faith in Syria.  Dib focused on his experience growing up as a Christian in Syria and also offered a view to the present crisis.

Now, his wife is collecting another container and has enough clothes to send and is looking for sponsors for the shipping costs.
