EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – On Wednesday Feb.12, the Egg Harbor Township Police Department took Steven Geisel, 49, of Egg Harbor Township, into custody on animal cruelty charges for his alleged involvement in the death of a dog found Jan. 29.

Bail on this charge was set by Municipal Court Judge H. R. Switzer at $10,000 full and Geisel was lodged in Atlantic County Justice Facility.

Police charged Geisel on Feb. 4 for his alleged role in the beating death of a young female dog found behind Norms-Dale Mobile Home Park, but he was not taken into custody until Feb. 12.

According to Detective Mark Wagner, the dog, a pit bull named Bella, was the family dog of a relative of Geisel's who lives in the community.

It appeared that the dog’s neck was stomped repeatedly, police said.

The day the Bella was found in the woods behind the park, Nancy Beall, the president of the Atlantic County SPCA told NBC40 that she believed the dog suffered.

"It’s horrific, really; absolutely disgusting, and there's no excuse for it, none whatsoever. That dog suffered and I think it was probably beaten,” she said. “Nothing should be treated like that."

If convicted, Geisel could face jail time, fines and community service. Wagner said the charges are the result of both public tips and investigation.
