EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – Six people were displaced by a house fire Saturday morning, March 15 at 320 Stafford Avenue in the township’s Farmington section.

Six fire companies and other agencies were called to battle the blaze, which took an hour to extinguish. Firefighters faced heavy smoke coming from the one-story wood frame home, and had to maneuver around large debris that was scattered around the dwelling.

The American Red Cross Southern Shore Chapter said two families were displaced by the fire and had to be placed in a hotel.

The volunteer fire companies of Farmington and Cardiff from the Egg Harbor Township Fire Department were dispatched at 9:38 a.m. in response to a report of smoke coming from a structure.

Police arrived and reported smoke, and by the time Farmington Chief Len Tilley arrived, he reported a working fire and requested a rapid assistance team from the Northfield Fire Department, one engine from the Bargaintown Volunteer Fire Company, members from the West Atlantic City Volunteer Fire Company and the Bayview Volunteer Fire Company to cover the Farmington station.

The Cologne Volunteer Fire Company from Hamilton Township, en route to training at the Atlantic County Fire Academy, was diverted to provide assistance. Cardiff and Farmington firefighters attacked the interior, while Cologne firefighters opened up the home. Upon arrival, Bargaintown and West Atlantic City firefighters assisted in the firefighting operations.

The fire was investigated by the Egg Harbor Township police and the fire official. Also responding were the Cardiff Ladies Auxiliary and Atlantic City Electric.
