MAYS LANDING – An Egg Harbor Township man has been indicted for animal cruelty in connection with the killing of a dog, Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced Wednesday, June 18.

On Wednesday, June 11, Steven D. Geisel, 50, of the 2000 block of Ocean Heights Avenue in Egg Harbor Township, was indicted by an Atlantic County grand jury on one count of animal cruelty – a third-degree crime – for the bludgeoning death of a female pit bull canine in a wooded area adjacent to Ocean Heights Avenue in Egg Harbor Township, on or about Jan. 29, 2014.

An investigation by the Egg Harbor Township Police Department and the Atlantic County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals led to the animal cruelty charge, and Geisel’s arrest on Feb. 12.

Bail was set by Municipal Court Judge H. Robert Switzer at $10,000. Geisel was lodged in the Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility in lieu of bail, where he has remained since.

The state alleges that Geisel beat the dog with a blunt object, inflicting traumatic injuries to its neck that caused its death.

A third-degree crime carries a potential penalty of three to five years of incarceration in New Jersey state prison.
