To the editor:

I returned home in Egg Harbor Township at 6 a.m. June 30 after the massive derecho hit our area. My wife warned me of the devastation I would encounter on our street, School House Road, but nothing she said prepared me for what I saw.

As I turned onto my street, one of five large trees that had fallen onto the road blocked my passage to my house. I parked my vehicle and walked to my property.

As I approached, I barely recognized my property or our beautiful street. I was wondering how we would be able to get to and from our home with all the trees blocking the road.

At approximately 7 a.m. five Egg Harbor Township police officers arrived in full uniform with chain saws and worked like lumberjacks for the next five hours clearing trees from our street. They worked without complaint in temperatures approaching 100 degrees, going beyond the call of duty to begin to get our area back to normal.

We want to take the opportunity to thank the five officers that worked on our street (Bertino, Weldon, Winkel, Owen and Harte). Police officers like these five men help make Egg Harbor Township a great place to live and work.

Thank you again.
