Say a prayer for texting drivers

To the editor:

As a courier for a prominent South Jersey hospital I have the occasion to drive throughout our area. I am impressed with the number of young men and women who are not ashamed to bow his or her head in prayer at traffic lights. Why I have even seen them continue to pray as they drive down the road.

Oh you say they aren't praying? They are texting? Well then I should be praying not for their conversion, because these techno zealots are faithful and will not stop this practice no matter what mandates may suggest. These poor folks are hopelessly hooked forever.

So I pray for the one at the green light that remains stopped as well as the one who is in my lane but is going in the opposite direction. But I pray mostly for second- and third-graders that someone might step up and introduce mandatory education in this regard so that when they reach their 17th birthday the very notion of texting behind the wheel will be the shameful, selfish, irresponsible and dangerous thing that it is.

Until then, let us all pray.
